UncertWeb: about the project

UncertWeb develops the science and technology to make the uncertainty enabled model web a reality. The model web concept requires that resources, and in particular models are exposed as web services which can be discovered and combined, or chained, to produce complex, multi-component models. A short film summarises the developments in UncertWeb.

The model web is a task within the Global Earth Observation System of Systems, Model Web Development task:

Develop a dynamic modelling infrastructure (Model Web) to serve researchers, managers, policy makers and the general public. This will be composed of loosely coupled models that interact via web services, and are independently developed, managed, and operated. Such an approach has many advantages over tightly coupled, closed, integrated systems, which require strong central control, lack flexibility, and provide limited access to products.

UncertWeb builds on this, to enable the management of uncertainty within the model web. We believe uncertainty will be an essential aspect that must be addressed within the model web concept. Without tools and support for uncertainty propagation and management users of the model web will have no idea of the information content and decision making value of the outputs and conclusions drawn from running models within the model web.

The work in UncertWeb is split into several workpackages (WP). WP1 and WP2 develop the infrastructure needed to make the technology work, WP3 develops the tools to help people use the technology, WP4, 5, 6, and 7 provide motivating exemplars of the technology in use and WP8 integrates the technology and evaluates the results of the project.
